ifm Institut für Mittelstandsforschung der Universität Mannheim


Das Institut für Mittelstandsforschung ist eine zentrale Forschungseinrichtung der Universität Mannheim und führt seit fast 30 Jahren Forschungsvorhaben zu aktuellen und strukturellen mittelstandsbezogenen Themen durch. Gegenwärtig arbeiten 30 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler am ifm Mannheim. Seine besondere Stärke liegt in der interdisziplinären Ausrichtung und der Brückenfunktion zwischen Wissenschaft, Politikberatung und Praxis. Die Arbeit des ifm konzentriert sich auf die folgenden vier Forschungsthemen: (1) Digitalisierung und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit im Mittelstand, (2) Familienunternehmen, (3) Arbeitsmarkt und Selbständigkeit sowie (4) Entrepreneurship.

Marc Kowalzick and Michael Woywode (both ifm, Chair of SME Research and Entrepreneurship) and their co-author Moritz Appels (Rotterdam School of Management) were awarded the 2023 Best Paper Award of the Behavioral Strategy Track during last week’s conference of the European Academy of Management (EURAM). Marc Kowalzick and Jan-Philipp Ahrens (both at University of Mannheim’s Chair of SME Research and Entrepreneurship/ifm), have published a paper in the renowned Journal of Management Studies together with Jochim G. Lauterbach (TU Munich) and Yi Tang (Hong Kong University). The course MAN 639 TRANSFORM - Innovation & Entrepreneurship for Sustainability is a collaborative course on innovation and (social) entrepreneurship for sustainable development. It was offered by a team of lecturers across the Universities of Heidelberg, Warsaw, Sorbonne, Copenhagen, and Mannheim. The course introduced the concepts of open and frugal innovation, strategic thinking for social problem solving, scaling sustainable solutions, and measuring societal impact.
