Entrepreneurial organizations

Entrepreneurial organizations ifm Mannheim

As growth drivers of economic systems, start-ups and the sustainable development of organizations are an essential factor. Around 800,000 companies are founded in Germany every year, half of them in full-time employment. Understanding how and why these start-ups are successful in the long term is of central importance for politics, research, and corporate practice. Accordingly, ifm Mannheim deals with the questions of how new companies are created, how they develop and why they may fail.

The emergence, development and failure of young companies is the topic of research in the area ofcompetence “entrepreneurial organization.” It is of interest, for example, how scalable businessmodels can be successfully configured andfinanced. In a rapidly changing environment, businessmodels and their innovations are the essential unit of analysis to understand how start-ups andcompanies can develop successful configurations. The organizational and governance structures alsoplay an important role in scalability and company growth. In addition, the influence of input variablessuch as organizational resources or special technologies on rapid company growth and the survival ofstart-ups is examined. The research also focuses on promising strategies in specific industries, such as the field of high technologies. As part of high-tech entrepreneurship, the influence of technological developments onthe growth, sustainability and economic success of organizations is examined. Questions are alsoexplored as to how targeted innovation and technology management can be successfully used fornew product development or for intrapreneurship approaches.

The increasing digitization and networking of business and society creates new opportunities but alsorisks for start-ups. For this reason, ifm Mannheim also addresses questions such as how informationtechnologies can support the success of young start-ups or how digitalization is changing businessmodels and start-ups.

Last but not least, survival, growth and the performance of newly founded organizations oftendepend on funding from external resource providers. For this reason, general and organization-specific factors of successful financing are subjects ofanalysis in research work at ifm Mannheim

Luca Castellanza und Michael Woywode publizieren Artikel zu "Krisen und Krisenbewältigung am Beispiel von Startups in Süd-West Kamerun" in der Zeitschrift "Entrepreneurship & Regional Development" (04.03.24)
Der Artikel trägt den Titel: "Types, determinants, and outcomes of entrepreneurial behaviours during crises". Through an analysis of entrepreneurship in South-West Cameroon, we identify three behaviours entrepreneurs enact in response to crises: passive, hustling, and future-oriented, which differ with regards to activities, driving motivations, main objectives, approaches towards present and future adversity, and dominant focus concerning the use of resources. We also find that entrepreneurs’ enacted behaviours depend chiefly on the nature of the losses they incur and on the type of social capital they can avail of in the aftermath of a crisis. mehr...
