Entrepreneurial ecosystems and innovations

Entrepreneurial ecosystems and innovations ifm Mannheim

Entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial projects are embedded in a larger social and institutional framework. Here investors, customers, suppliers, and competitors are of great relevance. However, other actors also come into play who can have an impact on the form of entrepreneurship and innovation, especially around the establishment of a company. These can be (economic) political actors, but also educational or start-up funding institutions. The ifm Mannheim deals with various questions that subject the constellation, interaction, and impact of entrepreneurial ecosystems to a closer analysis. The focus is also on the interaction of actors. Here, we are interested in how start-up or innovation networks coordinate, what importance and development regional clusters take, and what results (e.g. innovations) produce these phenomena.

Company foundations take place within certain contexts. Not only the close environment but also actors in the entrepreneurial ecosystem play a decisive role for innovation and success. In this context, institutions for start-up qualification and start-up support should be mentioned. Acquiringentrepreneurial skills as well as knowledge relevant to start-ups is clearly establishing itself as an important part of curricula at different levels in the education system. Entrepreneurship education is now particularly widespread at universities. Which teaching methods and instruments (e.g. design thinking) are suitable for teaching innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial action? And how does teaching ultimately affect the founding intentions of the target group? When examining these phenomena, ifm Mannheim makes comparisons between different ecosystems to identify good practices.

In addition to the educational institutions, goal-oriented support for those interested in starting a business is high on the agenda, especially for economic policy actors. This can take the form of direct or indirect financial support, for example, but also in the form of start-up advice and coaching. But what constitutes high-quality start-up advice and how effective is it? What advice do founders actually have and which dynamics should be considered? Ifm Mannheim deals intensively with the theoretical foundation and conceptual design of start-up advice.

Thee actors within the entrepreneurial ecosystem can have connections and links that are examined inmore detail in the analysis of networks. Research focuses on the network as a whole as well as theindividual connections within the network and the interplay of various such networks. For example, the entirety of a founder's ecosystem can be viewed when it comes to assessing the potential for hisor her founding idea. However, individual connections, their strength and the direction ofcommunication can alsobe analyzed when it comes to locating and better understanding the personof the entrepreneur within his ecosystem. Finally, ecosystems as a whole can also be compared whenit comes to evaluating the potential of existing networks. The result variables are economic successfactors, but also potential-oriented variables such as innovative strength. In its research, ifmMannheim investigates, for example, which coordination instruments within interorganisationalnetworks actually go hand in hand with a highlevel of innovation. The importance of innovation inparticular should not be underestimated. Globalization, turbulence on the financial markets andtechnological change lead to a dynamic that makes the predictability of future development considerably more difficult. As a result, young and established companies are in constant innovationcompetition and have to invent and develop products today that address consumers and futurechallenges. In this context, regional clusters also play an important role.

Regional clusters are a phenomenon of great relevance for science, business and politics. They arespatial concentrationsof companies, specialized service providers and supporting organizations (e.g.universities or research institutions) that act togetherin a specific field of activity or technology.Examples such as Silicon Valley in the USA or the Forum Organic Electronics in Germany demonstratea regional ecosystem with optimal conditions for the development of innovations. This is due on theone handto the spatial proximity of the actors to each other, but also to the specific circumstancesof a region. In addition to the framework conditions and their effect on the innovative strength ofclusters, ifm Mannheim also examines the configurations of organizations and institutions withinspecific clusters and their generation and transfer of knowledge.

Article “Innovation in the post-succession phase of family firms" by Jan Zybura, Nora Zybura, Jan-Philipp Ahrens und Michael Woywode published in the Journal of Family Business Strategy (online first) (26.03.20)
In their article "Innovation in the post-succession phase of family firms: Family CEO successors and leadership constellations as resources", the authors (all University of Mannheim/ ifm) investigate the post-succession innovation output of family and non-family CEO successors in family businesses using a sample of 455 German family firm successions. From a resource- and knowledge-based perspective, it is examined how successor origin (i.e., family versus non-family CEO), continued predecessor influence, and context factors are related to post-succession innovation output. Results indicate that a family CEO successor, higher successor CEO-related human capital, and prolonged predecessor influence increase the likelihood that post-succession innovation output is realized and, further, that the effect of predecessor CEO influence is moderated by successor CEO-related human capital. These results suggest that in many leadership constellations, distinctive familiness and access to the predecessors’ knowledge resources, as well as the transfer of resources and knowledge spillovers, provide a setting that enables innovation.
