Prof. Dr. Kateryna Nekit


Prof. Dr. Kateryna Nekit studied Economics and Law at ASEM (Republic of Moldova) and obtained a diploma in Law (Specialization Economic Law). She continued her studies as a research fellow at the National University “Odesa Law Academy”, where she completed her PhD in 2011. In 2021, she defended her habilitation thesis on theoretical and practical problems of the right to private property in the information society and became Dr. of Juridical Science (comparing to Dr. Habil). Since 2022 Kateryna is Professor of civil law in the National University “Odesa Law Academy”.

Kateryna published more than 80 papers in Ukrainian and international journals. Her research interests lie at the intersection of property law and changes in the legal regulation of civil relations under the influence of globalization and information-communicative technologies. Her work focuses on understanding the legal nature of digital property and the influence of the digitalization processes on the traditional doctrine of ownership. She is working on developing an approach to legal regulation of some new objects of legal relations covered by the concept “digital data”. In addition, her research interest target on possibilities to use provisions on fiduciary ownership and trust dealing with digital assets, in particular, in the sphere of digital inheritance. 

In the past, Kateryna’s work also covered comparative research of peculiarities of fiduciary management and fiduciary ownership in the countries of Anglo-American and Romano-Germanic legal tradition.

Currently Kateryna is working on the project “Digital assets in technology-oriented startups: current state and perspectives”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation as a guest researcher in ifm.
