Creativity and Entrepreneurship in Practice introduces students to the more practical elements of innovation and enterprise activity across multiple contexts along with the exploration of students' own entrepreneurial potential.

The course `Creativity and Entrepreneurship in Practice´ introduces concepts of creativity and entrepreneurship and models which facilitate their translation in this course into business designs (and elevator pitches) which can then, in turn be implemented in actual businesses to be established in the subsequent semester.

The course will take place seven times starting on September 15th 2010 at 01.45 pm to 05.00 pm in the lecture room 001 at the ifm, L9, 1-2. Additionally, room 201 at the second floor has been booked for instructed team work throughout the course. Final presentations will take place on December 8th 2010 during regular lecture time. In detail, the course will follow the format:
7 bloc seminars & final presentations:
  • September 15th: Introduction, Group Building, Presentation of two business ideas (EMBL/DKFZ); Daniela Brecht, Entrepreneurs of business ideas
  • September 22th: Creative Problem Solving Model; Daniela Brecht
  • September 29th: Creativity techniques; Stefan Kessen
  • October 6th: Business Models; Prof. Dr. Michael Woywode
  • October 20th: Types of business ownership; Dr. Tilo Jung
  • November, 10th: Entrepreneurial Finance; Yipeng Liu
  • November, 24th: How to write a business plan; Jessica DiBella
  • December, 8th: Group Project Presentations

Students may choose whether they generate and realize their own business idea or establish and implement a business idea already developed by the founders. For this purpose, two real life, promising business ideas will be delivered by the course instructor.
One project is originated by two professors of the University Hospital in Heidelberg and promoted by the EBML (The European Molecular Biology Laboratory). It is called „InoCardia“. Major goal should be the development and subsequent commercialization of biological therapeutics targeting molecular causes of heart failure. The enterprise is conceptually based on patented biologics capitalizing on the superior therapeutic profile of gene-based and peptide-based treatments derived from the protein S100A1.
The other project is about a patent-registered technology called versatile method to link diagnostics and/or therapeutics to biomolecules (P-687) derived from a professor at the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) in Heidelberg.
Both ideas will be presented by the inventors within our first session on Wednesday 15th September, 2010. Teambuilding will take place on the very same day.
Teamwork on the projects will be carried out by groups of three persons minimum to six persons maximum.
The course focuses on three main themes:
  • to motivate the students to form groups (of 3-6 members), which then come up with creative business design
  • encouraging students to investigate and experience creative processes involved in generating and assessing entrepreneurial ideas and
  • preparing students to implement innovative ideas in the marketplace

Each group “pitches” its design before a jury of insider professors plus outside venture capitalists. The best design will then be used as the basis for subsequent course Entrepreneurial Spirit which seeks to establish one or more businesses.

Learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will have:
  • explored and developed your own entrepreneurial creativity

  • experienced and applied a six stage creative problem solving process
  • developed skills and abilities that can be applied to improve your effectiveness in the rest of your studies and in life outside the curriculum
  • developed a business plan for a concrete start up project
